About the Research

In the beginning of 2006, CSI initiated the project “Lithuanian Self-Government:  The Path to a More Civil-Minded Community”.  The research, involving sociologists, jurists and political scientists seeks to analyze Lithuanian self-government within the Eastern and Central European context.  Recommendations will be presented to political leaders and the general population at the end of 2006 about ways to strengthen self-government in Lithuania and increase the role and influence of citizens in government affairs.

As part of the research, a study called “Community and Government:  Strengthening the Underlying Level of Self-Government“ will aim to strenghten the lowest rung of the self-government ladder.  CSI will explore models of community participation in local government affairs and will offer choices for plans of action for local government reform.  The research will involve both quantitative and qualitative methods.
