When implementing the project “Creating Republic: Fostering Competencies of the Society‘s Civic Activeness“, the Civil Society Institute conducted a qualitative study of the status of civic education in Lithuanian schools in spring 2012. The goal of the study was to find out the attitudes toward various youth-oriented projects and their opportunities to develop youth‘s civicness.
While implementing the project, 9 group discussions were organized with secondary school teachers and students, vocational school teachers and students, college teachers and students as well as their potential social partners in the implementation of civic activity projects (local government, NGOs, education centres, local media).
Study revealed how civicness is understood in Lithuanian schools and what, in the opinion of study participants, should be the outcome of civic education at schools under ideal conditions; how current schools’ opportunities to develop civicness are assessed and what should be changed in order to achieve better results of the youth’s civic education; how the participants of the youth’s civic education projects themselves evaluate the results of these projects; what factors, according to the potential participants of civic education projects, are important in ensuring effective implementation of civic education projects.
Research was conducted and report was prepared by Rūta Žiliukaitė, Irena Stonkuvienė, Maryja Šupa, Ieva Petronytė.
